Contentment – Getting out From Under the Circumstances

This guest post is by Dennis Hester, author, intentional interim minister, and church consultant and director for www.BetterChurches.com

H. A. Ironside was influenced by the famous evangelist Dwight L. Moody. He accepted Christ at 13, and at 16 began preaching as many as 500 times in one year for the Salvation Army. He became a beloved international Bible teacher, lecture, preacher and in 1930 became pastor of the famous Moody Memorial Church in Chicago.

I was thinking today, about how precious and priceless contentment has become for me. You may long for contentment also. The following thought is from Dr. Ironside as he reflects on (Phil.4:11) “I have learned in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.”

Dr. Ironside says, “Christ is enough to satisfy the hearts of all who confide in Him and who leave everything in His hands. Such need never be cast down by seeming misfortunes.”

A Christian asked another how he was getting along. Dolefully his friend replied, “Oh, fairly well, under the circumstances.”

“I am sorry,” exclaimed the other, “That you are under the circumstances. The Lord would have us living above all circumstances, where He Himself can satisfy our hearts and meet our every need for time and eternity.”

Good Commentaries on the Old Testament are Hard to Find.

This guest post is by Dennis Hester, author, intentional interim minister, and church consultant and director for www.BetterChurches.com

Great commentaries are hide to find on the Old Testament. One trusted Biblical scholar and practical preacher that I turn to when preaching on Psalms is, Exploring Psalms by the late Dr. John Phillips. He was a master at alliteration, which many preachers use to help their Bible classes and congregations remember their messages.

Look at the way Dr. Phillips alliterates Psalm 121:3-8:

  • A. The Problem of Weariness (vv.3-4),
  • B. The Problem of Weakness (vv.5-6),
  • C. The Problem of Wickedness (v.7),
  • D. The Problem of Waywardness (v.8).

Those who love the Psalms will also love Dr. Phillips’ entire 25 volume set of Old and New Testament commentaries now on sale in memory of Dr. Phillips’ July 25th home-going. WORDsearchBible.com is offering Dr. Phillips set of commentaries in digital format so that you can download this invaluable piece of scholarship to your computer.

The late Dr. Phillips left an enduring legacy in the study and writing of his set of Old and New Testament commentaries.

This guest post is by Dennis Hester, author, intentional interim minister and church consultant and director for www.BetterChurches.com

Dr. John Phillips, a beloved preacher, theologian, author, and speaker, went home to be with the Lord on July 25th. Dr. Phillips left an enduring legacy in the study and writing of his set of Old and New Testament commentaries. He was faithful to the Scriptures as he accurately divided the truth and was always practical with his constructive comments. With his gentle, probing applications to the Christian life, one can tell he loved the Lord as well as His Word.

And if you enjoy alliteration, so that your students or congregation can easily follow your Bible study or sermon, Dr. Phillips will be a big help to you. From his commentary on Exploring Ephesians look how he alliterates (Eph.1:7):

  • (1). Redemption (1:7),
    • (a) The Person Involved (1:7a),
    • (b) The Price Involved (1:7b),
    • (c) The Pardon Involved (1:7c).

When I preach on Ephesians, I always use Dr. Phillips’ commentary. You can learn how to own this 25 volume set at tremendous savings from wordsearchbible.com. They are offering Dr. Phillips’ set of commentaries in digital format so that you can download this invaluable piece of scholarship right to your computer. WORDsearch 9’s Incredible New Feature: WORDgraph

If you’re still using WS7 or WS8, this new feature of WS9 is SO cool, you’ll want to get upgraded immediately.  I’ve been playing with it, and this feature alone is worth the price of an upgrade.  If you’re using WS9 already, go get the FREE update and start using this WORDgraph function today.  (You can go to the Help menu and select “Check for Updates” to make sure you have it.)

Okay, here’s why I’m so excited about WORDgraphing.  It’s one more thing that WORDsearch does to help you make new discoveries in your Bible studies, and literally lets you SEE things from a fresh perspective.  Now, when you search any Bible word or phrase, you can simply click the “Graph” tab and see a bar graph of how that word is used throughout the Bible.  You’ll see a bar for each of the 66 books.  The first time you do it you’ll be hooked.  It’s like looking at a landscape of word usage, like seeing a concordance in 3D.

WORDgraph: Total Hits

You can aim this thing too! It helps you see the differences in translations.  Search the word “suffer,” and aim your WORDgraph at the KJV.  You’ll see a landscape of 151 usages of “suffer” and its cognates throughout the KJV Bible.  Now, aim it at the NKJV.  The landscape changes to only 79 hits.  As you hover over each bar, WORDsearch tells you how many hits are in each Bible book.  If you click on a bar, you get an instant verse-list of all the occurrences in that book.  You’ll quickly realize that the NKJV doesn’t use phrases like “Suffer the little children.”  You can aim this Search Graph at any Bible in your WORDsearch library.

There’s more. You can search more than just single words.  You can search entire phrases and see the results laid out graphically.  For example, search the word “Fear.”  You’ll get 367 hits, and by far, the most are in the Psalms (62).  Do another search on “Fear not.”  Now you’ve got only 129 hits with just 8 occurring in the Psalms.  The big winners for “Fear not” are Isaiah (15 hits) and Jeremiah (14 hits).  Just for kicks, I searched “My people.”  321 hits in the Bible, but only 10 in the entire New Testament!  This works in Greek and Hebrew too.  Just right click on a word, tell it to search, and view the graph.  It takes about 2 seconds.

Do you see where I’m going with this? I got all this after playing with the new WORDgraph for maybe a half-hour or so.  Imagine the discoveries YOU could make.  I would LOVE for you to post your own experience right here and share your graphing discoveries with me and thousands of others who can’t get enough when it comes to mining the riches of God’s Word.

May God bless you as you WORDsearch and WORDgraph!

The Story of the Complete Biblical Library

Here’s how WORDsearch reached around the globe to bring this remarkable resource to you:

Thoralf Gilbrant, a Norwegian evangelical preacher, was one of Scandinavia’s most famous theologians.  Back in the 1960s he had an inspiring vision that would consume the rest of his life.  Gilbrant believed he could bring the riches of the original Bible languages (Greek and Hebrew) to every man or woman who wanted to study God’s Word.  Gilbrant sought the help of every Bible scholar he could find and published a 5-volume set called Studie Biblien in the Scandinavian languages.  It was a success in this small part of the world.

Thoralf Gilbrant

Thoralf Gilbrant

But Gilbrant’s real goal was to vastly expand the work and publish it in English, where he felt it would have the greatest evangelical reach.  So in the early 80s he came to America and enlisted the help of hundreds of Bible scholars.  With the backing of Dagengruppen, a Swedish ministry, he started a publishing company, World Library Press, in Springfield, Missouri.  In 1986, they began printing volumes of The Complete Biblical Library. Over one million man-hours went into this project.  Gilbrant’s idea was to create a library that contained ALL of one’s Bible study tools in a single resource, and do it in a way that users could study directly from the Greek and Hebrew, even without language training.

Hundreds of thousands of books were sold to eager pastors and students of the Word.  In 2001 the 39th and final book in the set was published, but like many huge reference sets, it became impractical to continue, so World Library Press closed it’s doors.  That’s when the demand for this resource really accelerated.  CBL books were being sought like collectables on the internet.  Some of the harder to find volumes like Revelation and Luke were selling on eBay for over $200 a book!  Sets were selling for over $2,000.

This is when WORDsearch got involved.  Thoralf Gilbrant had passed away a few years earlier, so we tracked down his Norwegian heirs and relentlessly pursued the rights to again make this great work available for students of God’s Word.  As soon as we secured the exclusive rights, it became a priority project to convert 23,589 pages into WORDsearch eBooks.  Now it’s available and the response has been tremendous.  Gilbrant would be proud.

We’ve spoken to some of the American publishers who ran World Library Press and they have told us, “WORDsearch has taken this far beyond Gilbrant’s dreams.  The eBook edition of this is so much faster and links to so many other works.  Thank God you were able to do this.”

Three sets are available: The 17-volume NT Set, the 22-volume OT Set, or the 39-volume Bible Lovers Set, which contains both NT and OT.  To get a better understanding of all that is in the CBL, see our short demonstration video.

Guest Testimonial: Dr. Glen Spencer, Jr.

Dr. Glen Spencer, Jr.

Dr. Spencer

Today we’d like to share a testimonial about WORDsearch from guest blogger Glen Spencer, Jr., Pastor of Vernon Baptist Church in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Thanks for the kind words, Dr. Spencer!

Technology is one of the great blessings of our day. The benefits of good Bible software are nearly ineffable. I’ve used WORDsearch since version 5, making the jump from STEP to the CROSS format with version 7, and building an extensive digital library along the way.

I have dealt with folks at many different levels at WORDsearch including Sales Representatives, Customer Service, Technical Support, even Programming and Product Development, and I have never seen a company that takes care of its customers the way WORDsearch does. I remember when 7.0 came out we were allowed to convert the STEP books that we had purchased from WORDsearch for free and the ones we had purchased elsewhere for 10% of the retail. That’s customer service. WORDsearch isn’t just a Christian company in name, but in practice as well.

WORDsearch just keeps outdoing themselves. WORDsearch 9 offers several new features and improvements. The Library Manager is a great tool allowing the removal of unwanted books and even the option to reinstall them later if desired. Searching has improved with options to search for plurals and verb forms of words along with spelling help. Carousels is an entirely new feature that allows the user to define a set of books and quickly switch between them without opening and closing separate book windows. The new Target Window feature is a real winner. It allows the user to assign a specific Bible to be the target of any Scripture link. These are just a few of the new and exciting features in WORDsearch 9.

The folks at WORDsearch are truly “serving those who preach and teach to change lives.” Thank you, WORDsearch, for your hard work and support.

WORDsearch 9 Overview Video

WORDsearch 9 Overview

WORDsearch 9 Overview

Last night I had a little bit of free time after my three kids went to bed, so I thought I would take the time to record a brief overview video that highlights some of my favorite features & enhancements in WORDsearch 9, well if you consider 30 minutes to be brief.

Some of the features that I particularly like and cover in the video include:

  • the completely revamped Topic Explorer window
  • the improved Cross Reference Explorer window
  • multiple sync groups
  • group driver for sync groups (this is probably at the top of my personal list of favorites)
  • target window

Those are just a few of my favorites, and I also cover some other things in the video as well, such as the new icons and creating links. You’ll even catch a glimpse of a desktop layout that I like to use when doing expository studying (which I’ll feature in full in an upcoming video, showing how I fully make use of the above features).

Well, that’s enough talk. Go over to my ministry website by clicking the link below and watch the video. Feel free to leave feedback either here or at my site. Enjoy!
